 Michele Stanten, CEO of MyWalkingCoach.com, recommends starting a walking regimen with three 10-minute walks a day for 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise

 

 per the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. To reach the necessary 4,000 steps a day to lower mortality risk, she suggests counting steps and adding 500 or 1,000 steps.

 

 Measuring your mile time is another approach to quantify walking effort. Stanten: “In general, most people will cover a mile somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes.

 

 15 is on the faster side, but for people who are working out, that 15-minute-per-mile pace is very reasonable.” Break up your daytime walks if you're closer to 20 minutes.

 

 Stanten recommends bending your arms to maximize walking speed and cardio. Walking faster, shorter.
