The film followed Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's lavish 14-hour version of the story and had a long and turbulent production.   

After Lynch's version failed financially, the rights sat dormant for decades until Denis Villeneuve adapted the first half in 2021.   

Three years later, his follow-up completed the story.  

Each Dune movie has pros and cons, but there is a hierarchy.Despite its stunning vistas and standout passages, David Lynch's 1984 Dune is the weakest of the book's adaptations and indicative of its unwieldiness.
