'His Calling Card Is Defending': Maple Leafs' New Defense Addition Cade Webber keeps making Boston University history

Cade Webber continues to reach milestones after joining the Maple Leafs.

The 23-year-old was crowned Hockey East's best defensive defenseman on Wednesday, three days after being chosen defender of the week.

The Carolina Hurricanes traded Webber to the Maple Leafs on March 7 for their 2026 NHL sixth-round pick. The Hurricanes selected 6-foot-7, 210-pound Webber in the 2019 NHL draft's fourth round (99th overall).

"Our team has been tracking Cade. After the trade deadline on Friday, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving noted, "Not just this year, but before that.

" "Long defender. I realize people may check his stats. Defense is his priority.

His body is enormous. He moves the puck well. Defending, penalty killing, etc. are his specialty.

"His development is further along. Toronto's College Free Agent Scout Chris Bourque worked hard on this. He's closely following him. We bought him when we could."

With his two choices this week, Webber shattered the NCAA's division one men's hockey blocked shots record of 113. He set the record on Mar. 8 and has 118 blocked shots this season, 52 more than his teammate.
