"It was absurd. I simply tried to play better point to point and really just stayed in the moment," Rune remarked  

"By the conclusion of the second set, I was able to raise my game very dramatically, which meant everything for the match."

Rune will now face last year's runner-up, Medvedev, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-4 in a nearly faultless performance to maintain his chances of winning a first-round match this year after losing in the Australian Open final.  

Rune promised to come out swinging after splitting his two career matches with the Russian in the previous year.
