Inadequate sleep appears to be common in American culture. Many of us joke about never having enough sleep  

We may blame life's commitments for interfering with appropriate sleep, and it appears that sleep is frequently disturbed by intervals of waking during a typical night.   

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep issue, and one in every
